The students downstairs left a bag of garbage in the breezeway between the house and the garage. They forgot about it. We found it a few days later after an intense search of the property trying to find the source of a sudden and severe infestation of flys.
The garbage bag got thrown away but the flys weren't so easy to get rid of. They were everywhere, even in the house. Swarms of pesky fruit flys were driving us crazy. But not for long.
Kirkham built us 4 traps. To make the trap he placed about 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar in a small shallow bowl. He then added 4-5 drops of liquid dish soap to the vinegar. He placed plastic wrap over the top of the dish but then poked a few holes in the top so the flys could easily get in but would have a little more trouble getting out.
Last night we turned off all the lights except the hall light--the bugs are attracted to the light so this drew all of them from the rest of the house to the lit area. Kirkham then placed all four traps in the hallway. Within minutes there were already dead bugs floating in the liquid. By morning the problem was solved and we had 4 dishes of dead bugs.
I wish it was this easy to get rid of ants and cockroaches.
