Help Me: I can't sleep

Dear Friends-
Today it's my turn to ask you a question. I have been having a lot of trouble sleeping recently. I have had bouts of insomnia since my teen years but it is worse lately. I am tired all day but can't fall asleep when I do lay down. My legs and arms ache and twitch as I am finally relaxed enough to sleep. If I do manage to fall asleep I alternately wake up hot and cold all night long.

I do yoga regularly and stretch before going to bed to reduce the leg twitching. I have a regular bedtime and bedtime routine. I have tried sleep aids which help me get to sleep but my sleep is never restful and I always wake up groggier than I would have without.

So my question is: What are your "old wives" tricks for beating insomnia and getting more restful sleep OR getting through the day without much sleep?

I'm anxiously awaiting your replies!!
Dani

  1. Go to Fredmeyers and in their health food section get an herb that's called Valerian. The brand name that I use is called Oregon's Wild Harvest and it's Organic. It's a herb pill you take two or in your case three before bed and that helps calm you right down and sleep better. I love this stuff!! Good Luck!;)

  2. You might try melatonin supplements a few hours before bed, also available in health food stores. Also increase your iron intake, either through supplements or iron rich foods. Stay away from processed foods for a while and try eating mostly fresh fruits and veggies. Make sure your excercise time is not right before bed...that wakes up your muscles. Do a meditation/relaxation exercise where you tighten all your muscles and relax them one by one until you feel no tension in your body. Also, breathe as deeply and regularly as you can for a few minutes while your body is completely relaxed. Nothing new here, I know, but I hope something here is helpful. Love you!

  3. I wish that I had some marvelous words of wisdom for you. Have you asked for a blessing yet? That would be the first thing that I would do. The second thing would be to go to your chiropractor. I have a superb chiropractor out on 176th if you He is a member of the church too and is very awesome. He is NOT like some chiropractors who guilt you into coming all the time. The third thing would be to get a massage if you can....or ask Dave to do it for you. Seriously...it might make a huge difference. Sorry I don't have any more ideas. Please let me know how things turn out.

  5. I have been doing a lot of studies on Allergies to food and a lot of your symptoms sound like allergies, mine is to wheat once I eleminated that out of my diet I have been feeling like a whole new person, rice is my new best friend. It's amazing what allergies do to your body, my friend who is a couple of years younger than me just got rushed to the hospital because she was doing Medi Fast and it is Soy based well needless to say she almost had a heart attack because they found out that she has a severe allergy to Soy! If nothing else look into that and pay attention to the foods that you eat, how do you feel after eating curtain ones, ect. This might help you and your depression problem too, I know when I eat wheat I get really depressed, but when I don't I feel amazing!! I hope this helps!
