My favorite movie line of all time is from the movie Shrek. Shrek has just come home to find Donkey staying at his place. Donkey is very excited to see Shrek and assumes he'll be staying the night and exclaims, "We'll stay up all night telling MANLY stories, and in the morning, I'm gonna make WAFFLES!!"
We love waffles here! What could be better than a thick warm waffle, golden brown and crispy on the outside, light and moist on the inside, smothered in strawberries and adorned with a dollop of fresh whipped cream. Ummmmmm! The only thing that can top that is ice cream, my very favorite treat of all time! I am a self admitted ice cream-aholic. I know my weakness and it looks like ice cream. Put those two together and you have the ultimate--WAFFLE CONE SUNDAES!!
For Christmas Dave's brother gave us the ultimate, ultimate gift: a waffle cone press! It is so fun to mix up the batter and press out a few cones for an evening, or afternoon (or morning) treat. The kids get a big kick out of making them and an even bigger kick out of eating these once price-restrictive treats (Yes, I am too cheap to buy my kids a waffle cone--it's bad isn't it!). The recipe that came with the press is simple and requires only an egg, an egg white, 1/4 t salt, 1/2 c sugar, 2/3 c flour and 2 T butter. The waffles come out even and thin and, though hot, are fairly easy to handle and wrap around the cone press. So easy that Heath was the cooker and the kids, including Cora, shaped their own cones. The above recipe makes about 8 cones. We made a double batch to share with our cousins.
Then, like magic, viola, your cones are ready to stuff full of ice cream and whip cream and sprinkles and a cherry. If you end up with extra cones they save really well sealed in a ziploc bag. But that's a big if. Grab yours quick because they are likely to disappear fast.
